[00:00.82]Ludlow Massacre - Woody Guthrie
[00:04.26]It was early springtime when the strike was on,
[00:09.04]They drove us miners out of doors,
[00:12.89]Out from the houses that the Company owned,
[00:16.67]We moved into tents up at old Ludlow.
[00:23.49]I was worried bad about my children,
[00:27.73]Soldiers guarding the railroad bridge,
[00:31.97]Every once in a while a bullet would fly,
[00:36.07]Kick up gravel under my feet.
[00:40.76]We were so afraid you would kill our children,
[00:45.02]We dug us a cave that was seven foot deep,
[00:48.84]Carried our young ones and pregnant women
[00:53.55]Down inside the cave to sleep.
[00:59.22]That very night your soldiers waited,
[01:01.57]
[01:03.26]Until all us miners were asleep,
[01:05.47]
[01:06.74]You snuck around our little tent town,
[01:10.76]Soaked our tents with your kerosene.
[01:15.29]You struck a match and in the blaze that started,
[01:19.21]You pulled the triggers of your gatling guns,
[01:23.08]I made a run for the children but the fire wall stopped me.
[01:29.01]Thirteen children died from your guns.
[01:34.30]I carried my blanket to a wire fence corner,
[01:37.03]
[01:38.24]Watched the fire till the blaze died down,
[01:42.66]I helped some people drag their belongings,
[01:45.14]
[01:46.47]While your bullets killed us all around.
[01:51.56]I never will forget the look on the faces
[01:55.47]Of the men and women that awful day,
[02:00.12]When we stood around to preach their funerals,
[02:04.03]And lay the corpses of the dead away.
[02:09.62]We told the Colorado Governor to call the President,
[02:15.37]Tell him to call off his National Guard,
[02:18.16]
[02:20.28]But the National Guard belonged to the Governor,
[02:24.34]So he didn't try so very hard.
[02:27.35]
[02:29.59]Our women from Trinidad they hauled some potatoes,
[02:34.49]Up to Walsenburg in a little cart,
[02:37.83]They sold their potatoes and brought some guns back,
[02:42.43]And they put a gun in every hand.
[02:48.49]The state soldiers jumped us in a wire fence corners,
[02:53.10]They did not know we had these guns,
[02:55.44]
[02:57.46]And the Red-neck Miners mowed down these troopers,
[03:01.71]You should have seen those poor boys run.
[03:07.08]We took some cement and walled that cave up,
[03:11.46]Where you killed these thirteen children inside,
[03:16.56]I said, "God bless the Mine Workers' Union,"
[03:22.26]And then I hung my head and cried.
